hold your pencil between your thumb and pointer finger, with the butt of it in your palm. It’s awkward for a while, but then you can rotate the pencil to keep a sharp edge even with softer materials, and with some practice you can get straighter lines in any direction instead of one or two, because you’re drawing from your shoulder and elbow instead of your wrist. And the best part: it keeps your hands off the paper, so you never smudge.
